Blazers Upset by Shorter University Friday

Rome, GA-The Belhaven men's soccer team lost for the first time in 2011 on Friday falling at Shorter University 1-0 in a Southern States Athletic Conference matchup. The Blazers, ranked 5th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, had 19 shot attempts but unfortunately could not crack the scoreboard.

Belhaven (8-1, 3-1 SSAC) and Shorter (5-4, 1-2 SSAC) battled to a scoreless tie through 45 minutes of action. Early in the second half the Hawks would post the only goal of the match when Irvin Espinal found the back of the net off an assist by Garry Perks to make it 1-0 in the 50th minute. The Blazers had a chance to tie the match in the final frame, but Shorter goalie Ryan Edwards made three second half saves and six total saves in the match to preserve the shutout.

Achille Campion and Guilherme Brandao had the most looks at the goal with four total shots and one shot on goal apiece. Colby Case ended the contest with three total shots. Belhaven goalie Greg Hartley made five saves, but was charged with his first loss of the season in net for the Blazers allowing the only goal of the match.

Espinal had five shots for the Hawks including three on goal and was credited with the game winning shot. Edwards played all 90 minutes in goal to get the win. The Hawks were outshot 19-11 on the night.

Belhaven will take the field again on Saturday night when they travel to Lee University for another SSAC contest. The match is slated to begin at 7:00 PM.
