Blazers Glide Past Brewton-Parker

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven men's soccer team scored three unanswered goals in the second half to pull away for a 4-1 Southern States Athletic Conference victory against Brewton-Parker College Saturday afternoon at H.T. Newell Field. The Blazers, ranked 5th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, were able to break a 1-1 tie in the 61st minute thanks to a goal by Tom Cosgrave. Belhaven added two more after that en route to the win.

Belhaven (8-0, 3-0 SSAC) cracked the scoreboard first when Giovanni Correa unleashed a 20 yard shot at the top of the box that found the back of the net in the 38th minute for a 1-0 lead. Guilherme Brandao assisted on the play that gave Belhaven the edge going into halftime.

Brewton-Parker (3-3-1, 0-2 SSAC) answered with their first goal of the match in the 52nd minute when Francisco Depaz headed the ball in off an assist from Manase Irakoze knotting the score at 1-1. Then it was Cosgrave's turn, along with help from Will Monsour who assisted on the goal, to give Belhaven the lead back at 2-1. Monsour followed with a goal of his own in the 64th minute to make it a 3-1 Blazer advantage. Aaron McLoughlin picked up his fourth assist on the season which leads the team. Brandao then iced the game away for good at 4-1 in the 71st minute finding the back of the net off an assist by Axel Forsman.

McLoughlin led Belhaven in shot attempts with six and that included four shots on goal. Brandao attempted four shots and scored his fifth goal of the 2011 season. Cosgrave had one shot and made it count with his second goal of the year, Correa had two shot attempts with one being his first score, and Monsour took four shots landing one home for the seventh time in 2011. Goalkeeper Greg Hartley earned his eighth win in net and his supporting cast on defense limited the Barons to just four shots in the game. Belhaven ended the match with a 25-4 shot advantage and have not outscored their opponents 41-3 this season.

Brewton-Parker goalie Daniel Clavijo took the loss allowing all four Blazer goals while stopping seven other potential scores.

Belhaven will be back in action in another SSAC match at Shorter University on Friday followed by conference showdown at Lee University on Saturday. Friday night's match kicks off at 4:30 and Saturday's contest is slated to get underway at 7:00 PM.
