Blazers go 1-1 on Day Two of SSAC Crossover Tourney

Montgomery, AL-The Belhaven volleyball team split two matches on the second day of the Southern States Athletic Conference crossover tournament hosted by Faulkner University. The Blazers took on Emmanuel College in the first match and won 3-2 with set scores of 25-27, 25-27, 25-17, 25-12, and 15-13. Belhaven lost to Southern Wesleyan 3-2 with final set scores of 20-25, 25-19, 25-20, 18-25, and 12-15.

Belhaven (10-3, 2-1 SSAC) rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the first match of the day winning the final three sets to take home the victory. Taylor Williams slammed 20 kills and had 17 digs for a double double. Christina Atwood pounded 14 kills and had eight digs while boasting a hitting percentage of .423. Natalie Davis added 12 kills and Erin Bradley had 56 assists. Defensively, Katherine Owen had a team high 35 digs and Gabriella Zorzoli finished the match with 20 digs.

Belhaven spotted Southern Wesleyan a 1-0 edge in the second match of the afternoon, but the Blazers responded by winning the next two games to take a 2-1 lead. However, Southern Wesleyan pulled through in the final two games to win the contest.

Williams had another solid performance for Belhaven recording her second double double of the day with 21 kills and 12 digs. Her hitting percentage was .314. Atwood dropped in nine kills and Serita Ingram had seven kills in 11 attack attempts. Williams and Atwood are the leading attackers so far in 2011. Williams has a team best 139 kills and Atwood isn't far behind with 129.

Bradley came up with 39 more assists giving her 384 on the year and Owen paced the Blazers in digs with 24. Alyson Plyler contributed 11 digs and Zorzoli chipped in with 10 digs. Atwood had eight block assists to help on the defensive side of the net. As a team, Belhaven had 15 total blocks in the Southern Wesleyan match.

Belhaven will be back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to the University of Mobile for an SSAC West Division contest beginning at 7:30 PM.
