Blazers Register 4-1 Win over LSU-Shreveport

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven women's soccer team grabbed a 4-1 win over LSU-Shreveport in non-conference action Friday afternoon in the Belhaven Bowl. The Blazers used three second half goals to claim the win after heading into halftime tied at 1-1. Belhaven's offense had its best game of the season unloading 21 total shots with 11 being on goal.

Belhaven (2-3-1) didn't waste much time getting on the board thanks to senior Christin Kaim who sent a shot into the back of the net a minute and a half into the game. It was the third goal of the season for Kaim and it gave the Blazers a 1-0 edge. Belhaven held their 1-0 advantage until the 29th minute when LSU-Shreveport's Irene Henriksson knotted the score at 1-1. The numbers would remain that way through the end of the first half.

In the 64th minute, Rebecca Ontero put Belhaven in front for good at 2-1 with her third goal of the season. Ontero wasn't finished as she found the back of the net three minutes later and bumped her season total to a team high four goals in 2011. Mary Beth Weber capped the afternoon for Belhaven landing an insurance goal in the 84th minute sending the Blazers to a 4-1 win. The goal was Weber's first of the 2011 campaign.

Ontero was the star of the match for Belhaven as the freshman led the team in shots with five and in goals with two on the day. Morgan Ogale fired four total shots in the contest and Kaim attempted three shots in the match. Nicole Walsh picked up her second win of the year in net allowing just the one goal while making six saves.

LSU-Shreveport (3-2) was led in total shots by Brooke Martin who had six attempts with three being on goal. Henriksson scored the only goal of the match for the Pilots on her only shot attempt. Sandra Quintero tallied two total shot attempts in the match. Annabella Hughes played 67 minutes in goal and was charged with the loss allowing three of Belhaven's goals. Shay Wells played the final 23 minutes and surrendered one goal on the afternoon. The Pilots were outshot by the Blazers 21-13.

Belhaven will take the field again on Tuesday afternoon as the travel to Gainesville, GA to battle Brenau University in their Southern States Athletic Conference opening contest.
