Blazers Earn NAIA National Bid with Two Wins Friday

Box Score vs Shorter    Box Score vs Brenau
Columbus, GA- The Belhaven softball team earned an automatic NAIA National Tournament bid winning back to back games in the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Blazers took on Shorter University in game one defeating the Hawks 2-1. The Blazers then faced Brenau University in the second contest and defeated the Tigers 2-0.

Game One
The Blazers put up two runs in the game on just three hits. In the top of the first, Christina Jaques scored on a throwing error by second basemen Chelesa Blair. In the bottom of the third, Shorter scored a run tying the game at 1-1 from a Kara Pollock double to left that plated Jessica Womble. Belhaven got their second run in the top of the 4th giving themselves a one run advantage on Rebecca Rousseau's fourth homerun of the season. Rousseau's hit put the Blazers over the top as Shorter failed to score the rest of the game.

The Blazers had three different players with one hit a piece as Jaques, Austin and Rousseau reached safely on batted balls. Sarah Burns pitched all seven innings allowing eight hits and only one run. Womble and Pollock led Shorter who both had two hits apiece. Libby Munson pitched all seven innings allowing two runs and three hits.

Game Two
Belhaven only scored two runs in the second game, but it would prove to be all they needed in the 2-0 win. The Blazers jumped in front in the first when Jaques doubled to left center field and scored on a Carr sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. Carr then picked up her second RBI when she singled home Lizzy Hess in the top of the fifth inning. Burns made the lead stand up pitching all seven innings for the win.

Hess led Belhaven in hits going 3 for 3 with a run scored while Carr had the one hit and both runs batted in. Jaques had a double, which was the only extra base hit, and a run scored. Burns goes to 29-7 on the year with the win in the circle yielding four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Brenau was paced by four different players who had one hit each. Tiffany Schandera, Jenny Shepard, Sally Dugan, and Lana Lazar all had singles with the exception of Schandera who recorded a double. Shepard took the loss in the circle for the Tigers and falls to 11-3 in 2011. Shepard pitched all seven innings and was charged with both runs on 10 hits with a walk and one strikeout.

Belhaven will be back in action on Saturday in the SSAC Tournament Championship game starting at 1:00 PM. Belhaven's opponent is yet to be determined. Fans can follow all the play-by-play action through live audio by clicking here.
