Jackson, MS-On the strength of two early goals by
Achille Campion, the Belhaven men's soccer team powered past Southern Wesleyan University 4-3 in the Southern States Athletic Conference quarterfinals Saturday night at H.T. Newell Field. Campion had missed the previous six matches with an injury, but was a welcome site on Saturday delivering his 14th and 15th goals of the season. The Blazers then had to hold off a late charge by the Warriors after Belhaven had built a 4-1 lead.
Belhaven (15-3) moved ahead 1-0 when Campion slammed the first of his two goals into the back of the net in the 11th minute.
Victor Lawrence found him on the break away and was credited with the assist when Campion cashed in the score. In the 25th minute, the duo of Campion and Lawrence provided the second goal of the match as once it again it was Campion with the score and Lawrence with the assist.
The Blazers made it a three goal advantage in the 28th minute as
Giovanni Correa landed his second goal of the season as
Alex Rodriguez fed him the ball for the open look at the net. Southern Wesleyan's only goal in the first half came in the 37th minute when Emmanuel Forbes got behind the defense for a point blank shot that got by goalkeeper
Greg Hartley to make it a 3-1 game.
Belhaven extended the match back to a three goal edge at 4-1 on a breakaway goal by
Will Monsour. For Monsour, it was his 10th score of the season which is second most on the team behind Campion.
Southern Wesleyan (10-7) did not go away and played its way back into the match starting with a Raphael Fernandes goal in the 58th minute. He was assisted on the score by Daniel Pena which trimmed the deficit to 4-2. In the 64th minute, Belhaven committed a costly foul in the box setting up a penalty kick that Daniel Pena made good on to bring the Warriors within one at 4-3. Fortunately, the Blazer defense tightened down and prevented any further scoring chances for the Warriors.
Campion was efficient in his looks at the goal delivering the scores on his only two shot attempts of the night.
Guilherme Brandao had the most shot attempts for Belhaven with five in the contest. The Blazers had a huge advantage in total shots boasting a 22-8 edge in the match. Hartley played all 90 minutes and made two saves to pick up his 13th win of the year.
Pena had four of Southern Wesleyan's eight shot attempts and Fernandes ended the night with three looks at the goal. Goalie John Prochack played all 90 minutes for the Warriors allowing the four goals while making five saves.
Belhaven will now head to Gulfport, MS for the SSAC Semifinals and awaiting them will be Southern Polytechnic State University whom the Blazers defeated 1-0 earlier in the season. It will be the second consecutive season the two teams have met in the SSAC semifinals. Last year the teams battled to a 0-0 tie, but Southern Poly advanced to the championship match on a penalty kick shootout 4-2. Thursday's kickoff is slated for 7:30 PM.
