Blazers Fall Short against Rio Grande

Box Score
ORANGE BEACH, Ala.-The Belhaven men's soccer team saw the 2011 season come to a close on Tuesday night losing 1-0 in overtime to the University of Rio Grande (OH) in the round of 16 at the NAIA National Championships in Orange Beach, Alabama. Despite the loss, it was another great season for the Blazers who made it to the Sweet 16 for the second consecutive season.

Needless to say the match was dominated by both defenses as the teams combined for just 24 shots on the night. Unfortunately for Belhaven, the one shot that found its mark came off the foot of Rio Grande's Richard Isberner in the 95th minute. Scott Bibby made a bid to end the game moments earlier, but Blazer goalie Greg Hartley came up with the save only to see Isberner fire it back in off a rebound for his 29th goal of the season. Bibby got the assist as the Redstorm advance to the quarterfinals.

Belhaven (16-5) had three players with two total shots and one shot on goal each. Achille Campion, Guilherme Brandao, and Will Monsour had the most opportunities to score for the Blazers. Belhaven had 10 total shots as a team in the match compared to 14 for the Redstorm. Hartley logged 94:58 in net and suffered the loss allowing the one goal while making four saves.

Rio Grande (19-2) was led by Isberner with the goal on three shot attempts. Joel Thiessen had a match high of four total shots on Tuesday night. Goalie Jack Marchant played 94:58 minutes picking up the shutout victory with four saves.

Rio Grande will now face William Carey University in the quarterfinals on Wednesday night beginning at 7:30 PM. William Carey upset the University of Mobile on Monday night to punch its ticket to the quarterfinals.
