JACKSON, Miss.-The Belhaven men's soccer team advanced to the round of 16 in the 2011 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship thanks to a 3-2 victory over the University of Texas at Brownsville Saturday afternoon at H.T. Newell Field. The Blazers, seeded 12th in this year's tournament jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the Scorpions rallied in the second half with two goals and nearly tied the match in the final two minutes, if not for a save by Belhaven goalie
Greg Hartley.
Belhaven (16-4) got on the board in the fourth minute when
Achille Campion fired in his 16th goal of the season on a penalty kick. Texas at Brownsville (13-6-2) had committed a foul right in the front of the goal allowing Campion the opportunity at a free look at the goal. In the 16th minute, Campion put the Blazers in front 2-0 on a shot at the top of the box from 20 yards out for his second score of the game.
Giovanni Correa fed him a pass in stride and was credited with the assist.
Belhaven struck again in the 18th minute as
Aaron McLoughlin cashed in on his fifth goal of the 2011 season off an assist from Philip Forsman. The goal by McLoughlin would later prove to be the difference in the game. The Blazers continued to control the match in the first half and took a 3-0 lead into the break.
The Scorpions got the offense going in the 53rd minute when Belhaven's
Johnny Hayes committed a foul setting up a free kick by Orrin Farrell. Farrell took advantage and banged one past Hartley for UTB's first goal of the match cutting the deficit to 3-1. In the 69th minute, Belhaven's
Alex Rodriguez was given his second yellow card of the contest resulting in a red card forcing the Blazers to play a man down the rest of the way. The Scorpions took advantage in the 75th minute when Frederik Ekvall fired in a goal off a deflected ball 15 yards in front of the goal making it a 3-2 game.
Belhaven had to dig in defensively from that point on as Texas at Brownsville applied the pressure in the final minutes. Charly Menard made a bid to tie the game in the 89th minute, but Hartley made the save of the match for the Blazers to preserve the 3-2 lead. The Scorpions made one final push in the closing seconds, but McLoughlin was able to clear the ball out the Belhaven zone as the final seconds ticked off the clock.
Campion led the Belhaven offense attempting six total shots, including four on goal. Two of them found pay dirt giving him 17 on the season. The Blazers were outshot 17-16 with the Scorpions holding an 11-5 shot edge in the second half. Belhaven took 11 shots in the first period compared to six for UTB. Hartley ended the day with six saves and two goals allowed as he improves to 14-4 in net this season.
Steve Howard, Orrin Farrell, and Victor Parreiras all had three shot attempts for University of Texas at Brownsville. Goalie Michael Argumedo had five saves, but allowed all three of Belhaven's goals leading to the loss in net.
Belhaven will now move on to the second where they will meet up with fifth seeded Rio Grande (OH) on Tuesday November 29th at 7:30 PM in Orange Beach, AL. Rio Grande defeated Madonna (MI) 4-1 in its opening round contest on Saturday.
