Blazers Suffer Tough Loss at SSAC Tourney

Biloxi, MS- The Belhaven volleyball team dropped its final contest of the season against fourth ranked Lee University in the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament 3-0 Friday afternoon. The final set scores were 25-16, 25-15, and 25-16.  The loss put the Blazers out of contention for further post season play as they finished with a season record of 23-13. The 23 victories was a 14 game improvement in the win column compared to last season and it was also the third most wins for a single season in school history.

Belhaven (23-13) was anchored by senior Christina Atwood who had eight kills and one block assist. Atwood would finish the season leading the Blazers in kills with 346 and 132 blocks.  Junior Natalie Davis totaled eight kills as well in the contest with a hitting percentage of .357. Samantha O'Malley managed to punch in five kills with nine digs. Erin Bradley turned in 24 assists while Gabriella Zorzoli rounded in 11 digs on the night.

Lee University (28-2) was paced by Marija Zelenovic with 14 kills while Arlene Ferreira followed with 10 kills in the contest. Gretchen Higdon dished out 20 assists while Stephanie Todd and Libby Peigen had 11 digs apiece.

Belhaven finished the 2011 season with a record of 23-13 and 6-8 in Southern States Athletic Conference play.  This season also marked the first appearance in the SSAC Tournament as the team failed to qualify for the postseason last year.
