Blazers Dominated by Cumberlands

Box Score
Williamsburg, KY-The Belhaven football team lost at the University of Cumberlands in a Mid-South Conference West Division matchup by the final of 58-0 Saturday afternoon. The Patriots rolled up 24 points in the first quarter and never looked back on their way to the victory. The Blazer offense could not find a rhythm and the defense was hurt by the play-action passing game of Cumberlands especially early in the game. Belhaven also committed six turnovers on the afternoon which led to points and setup the Patriots in outstanding field position.

Cumberlands (KY) scored on the opening possession of the afternoon generating a seven play 64 yard drive that resulted in an 11 yard touchdown run by Willie Gibson to make it a 7-0 game. Following an interception, the Patriots got the ball back at the Belhaven 21 yard line and immediately went up top as Andrew Brunnert found Gibson for a touchdown pass to make it 14-0. Cumberlands then took another interception and turned it into three points on a Justin Dyer 25 yard field goal.

The duo of Brunnert and Gibson struck again with 3:22 to go in the first quarter on a 59 yard touchdown extending the lead to 24-0. The Patriots went on to add three more scores in the second quarter on an 18 yard pass from Brunnert to Zack Stroub followed by a Brunnert one yard touchdown run and a Kel McCarter 23 yard fumble return for a touchdown. Cumberlands tacked on a touchdown with 7:37 to play in the third quarter as Fred Byars scampered to the house for a 17 yard touchdown. Then early in the fourth quarter, Jordan Allen capped the scoring on a 10 yard touchdown run.

Belhaven reached the Red-Zone only one time in the game and were turned away by the Patriots when they came up with their third interception of the game. The Blazers were unable to mount any further scoring threats on Saturday afternoon.

Belhaven (4-5, 2-3 MSC West) quarterback Jimmy Basford completed 13 of his 29 passes for 154 yards and tossed an interception. Alex Williams started the game and threw a pair of INT's before Basford came into the contest on the third drive. Basford was sacked five times in the game and scrambled for 42 rushing yards.
