Montgomery, AL-The Belhaven men's soccer team picked up a much needed 3-0 victory at Faulkner University in a Southern States Athletic Conference match Tuesday night. The Blazers had lost two of their last three matches coming in and are battling for a top four spot and opportunity to host an SSAC opening round tournament game. Belhaven is a half game behind Southern Poly who resides in fourth place and won 3-1 on Tuesday at Southern Wesleyan.
Belhaven (13-3, 8-3 SSAC) got on the board late in the first half as
Axel Forsman connected on his first goal of the season to make it a 1-0 contest.
Alex Rodriguez notched his third assist of the 2011 campaign on the goal by Forsman. Three minutes into the second half,
Guilherme Brandao secured his seventh goal of the year extending Belhaven's edge to 2-0 and then in the 77th minute
Johnny Saye capped the match finding the back of the net for the second time in 2011.
Felipe Ferreira picked up his first assist as the Blazers went on to take the 3-0 victory.
Forsman and Brandao each had four shot attempts in the contest and as a team Belhaven dominated on the offensive ended outshooting Faulkner 26-13. Blazer goalkeeper
Greg Hartley notched his 12th win of the season and ninth shutout thanks to eight saves in the contest.
Faulkner (4-11-1, 2-9 SSAC) was led in shots by Jonathan Dishon and Brighton Masuka who each had two shots on goal. Austin White took the loss for the Eagles in goal as he played all 90 minutes and made 11 saves.
Belhaven will now head to Hattiesburg, MS on Saturday to meet up SSAC rival William Carey University in the regular season finale. This weekend's match will be key for the Crusaders as well who still have a shot at the regular season title. Saturday's kickoff is slated for 7:00 PM.
