Montgomery, AL-The Belhaven men's soccer team added another match to the win column Wednesday afternoon thanks to a 2-1 decision over Southern Wesleyan University. It was also a historic day for Blazers Head Coach Steve DeCou who notched his 100th career coaching win. Belhaven, ranked 10th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, is now 11-1 on the season.
Both teams battled hard through the first half and when the clock ran out to end the opening period the match was tied at 1-1. The Blazers struck first in the 17th minute on
Aaron McLoughlin's fourth goal of the season. The shot was partially deflected by Southern Wesleyan goalie Leonardo Berenquel, but had enough momentum to carry over the line for the score. Joes Robles was given the assist on the play which gave Belhaven the early 1-0 edge.
Southern Wesleyan (3-4-2) struck back in the 35th minute on a header shot by Carlos Silva who was assisted by Daniel Restrepo. The SWU offense got into the box behind the Blazer defense setting up the Silva goal. Both teams unloaded seven shots in the first half and after 45 minutes of action the match was even both in shots and on the scoreboard.
With just over 10 minutes gone by in the second half, Belhaven jumped back in front on
Guilherme Brandao's team leading ninth goal of the season. Restrepo of Southern Wesleyan was called for a foul setting up a free kick for Brandao who slammed the ball into the back of the net above the hands of the goalie Berenquel. The score by Brandao was also his third game winning goal this season. The Blazers defense did the rest and kept SWU off the board for the remainder of the match to secure the victory.
Belhaven goalkeeper
Gautier Troch played all 90 minutes in net and locked down his 11th victory of the season allowing just the one goal while making five saves. Berenquel suffered the loss for Southern Wesleyan allowing two goals with four saves in 90 minutes of action in net.
Belhaven outshot Southern Wesleyan 15-14 and the shots on goal were even for both teams at six each. McLoughlin led Belhaven in shots and shots on goal with four. Manny Forbes had five total shots for SWU with the lone goal of the match going to Silva.
Belhaven will be back in action on Wednesday October 6th when they face off with the University of Mobile in a Southern States Athletic Conference Western Division showdown.
