Box Score
Jackson, MS-The Belhaven men's soccer team won for the 10th time this season Tuesday afternoon thanks to an 8-1 victory over cross town rival Millsaps in the Belhaven Bowl. The Blazers, ranked eighth in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, have now scored 18 goals in their last two matches and have outscored opponents 39-3 so far this season.
As has been the case in a number of games this year, it didn't take long for Belhaven to jump out in front as
Guilherme Brandao scored the first of his two goals in the game in the opening minute of play. Joes Robles earned his first assist of the 2010 campaign and the Blazers led 1-0. Millsaps (2-2-1) knotted the score at 1-1 in the fourth minute on a goal by Trey Fontaine and at that point it looked liked the contest could turn into a shootout.
However, Belhaven (10-0) had other plans and went on to score seven unanswered goals to pull away for the win.
Stefan Fernandez put the Blazers ahead for good in the fifth minute when he slammed the ball into the back of the net off an assist from Brandao. It was Fernandez's first of two goals in the match and the fifth of the season. He was credited with the game winning score in the match which was his third in 2010.
Stefan Fernandez,
Aaron McLoughlin,
Achille Campion, Wills Monsour, and
Tom Cosgrave all added goals to account for the rest of the scoring on the afternoon. Brandao ended the match with three assists and Campion was also given a pair of assists. Brandao has eight goals scored, six assists and 22 points which are team bests in all those categories.
As a team, Belhaven outshot the Majors 33-6 and had a 17-4 edge in shots on goal.
Gautier Troch earned his 10th win of the season in net for the Blazers as he logged the first 68 plus minutes allowing one goal while making three saves. Dylan Broussard started in net for Millsaps and was charged with the loss as he surrendered seven goals with five saves.
Belhaven will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they meet up with NCAA Division II Barry University in Jackson, TN. The match will be played on the Lambuth University campus starting at 3:00 PM.
