Mobile, AL-The Belhaven men's soccer team kept their perfect season alive on Friday night by knocking off Embry-Riddle University 2-0 as they go to 8-0 in 2010. The Eagles are ranked third in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll and they are the third ranked opponent that Belhaven has toppled so far this season. Most impressive is the fact that the Blazers have pitched shutouts in six of their first eight games this year and have given up only two goals all season.
Belhaven, ranked 17th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, got what would prove to be the game winner early in the match when
Alex Rodriguez found the back of the net for the fourth time this season. It was also his third game winning goal already this year. The Blazers were on the attack from the opening kickoff and Rodriguez's goal was the third shot on goal at that point in the contest. The Belhaven defense was suffocating as well and in the first 45 minutes goalie
Gautier Troch needed to make just one save.
In the second half Embry-Riddle (2-1) turned up the heat a bit, but
Achille Campion of the Blazers put out the fire with an insurance goal in the 53rd minute to make it a 2-0 lead. Campion, one of Head Coach Steve DeCou's key recruits, notched his first career goal off an assist by Philip Forsman which was his team high third assist in 2010. The Belhaven defense made the 2-0 advantage stand up the rest of the way en route to the upset victory.
Troch is now 8-0 in net for Belhaven and has six shutouts to his credit following a five save performance on Friday night. Four of Troch's saves came in the final 45 minutes of action. Kile Kennedy suffered the loss in net for Embry-Riddle allowing both Belhaven goals with six saves. As a team, the Blazers and Eagles were even in shot attempts with 15 each, but the Blazers had the edge in shots on goal 8-5.
Belhaven will be back in action on Saturday night when the return home to H.T. Newell Field to battle Talladega College in another non-conference contest. The kickoff is slated for 7:30 and fans can follow all the action through live stats which can be accessed by clicking
