Jackson, TN-It was all defense up until the 109th minute on Tuesday night when
Chris Cave connected on a game winning goal giving the Belhaven men's soccer team a 1-0 victory at Lambuth. It was the fifth shutout of an opponent in seven matches for the Blazers this season. Belhaven, who is ranked 17th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, has only allowed two goals the entire year.
Belhaven (7-0) had some chances early in the game to put a goal on the board, but could push one into the net until the final overtime period. For the match the Blazers attempted 19 total shots with nine being on goal. Cave finally made one of those shots on goal count in the second overtime as
Luke Blincow set up the game winning shot and was credited with an assist. For Cave, it was his second goal of the season on just his second shot attempt of the 2010 campaign. His other goal came against John Brown University this past Saturday in a 2-0 Blazer win.
Achille Campion led Belhaven in total shot attempts with five including three on goal while
Guilherme Brandao had four shots with two being on goal. Juan Garzon and Daniel Ericsson had two shots each for Lambuth.
As a team, Lambuth (0-3-2) attempted only nine total shots in the game and had three shots on goal which were all turned away by Belhaven goalkeeper
Gautier Troch. Troch is now a perfect 7-0 this season in net with five shutouts to his credit. Including his three saves on Tuesday, Troch has turned away 26 shots and has a save percentage of 93 percent.
Belhaven will be back on the field Friday when they head to Mobile, AL to battle Embry-Riddle University. Embry-Riddle is ranked 3rd in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll so Friday's showdown will be another tough non-conference matchup for the Blazers who have knocked off two top 25 teams so far this season. The kickoff is slated for 7:00 PM on the University of Mobile campus.
