Blazers Bounce 16th Ranked UT-Brownsville in Season Opener

Hattiesburg, MS-The Belhaven men's soccer team opened the 2010 season in fine fashion on Friday night by knocking off the University of Texas-Brownsville 2-1. The Scorpions are ranked 16th in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll while Belhaven was not ranked in this year's preseason poll following a 23rd ranking in the final 2009 NAIA Top 25 Poll.

Friday's battle was evenly matched as each team unloaded 14 total shots in the game. However, UT-Brownsville (0-1) gained the upper hand late in the first half on a goal by Aaron Guerrero in the 44th minute right before the intermission. The Scorpions continued to keep Belhaven (1-0) at bay until Alex Rodriguez struck pay dirt with his first goal as Blazer in the 72nd minute to knot the score at 1-1. Phillip Forsman got credit for the assist following an outstanding pass the setup the look at the net for Rodriguez.

Five minutes later, Rodriguez shot one past Scorpion goalkeeper Juan Gamboa on a free kick to give Belhaven a 2-1 edge. That would prove to be all the scoring the Blazers would need as the defense led by goalkeeper Gautier Troch kept UT-Brownsville off the board the rest of the way to secure the victory. Troch turned away seven Scorpion shots en route to the win in net. Gamboa took the loss in goal for UT-Brownsville while making three saves which all came in the first half.

Belhaven will be back in action on Thursday night September 2nd in their home opener against Louisiana College starting at 7:00 PM at H.T. Newell Field.
