Blazers Rack up Two More Wins against Columbia and Olivet

Bourbonnais, IL-The Belhaven softball team, ranked 7th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, picked up two wins on Saturday afternoon by defeating 25th ranked Columbia College (MO) 8-4 in game one and 24th ranked Olivet Nazarene University 6-4 in game two at Tiger Stadium in Bourbonnais, IL. The Blazers improve to 43-5 overall and are 10-2 in the GCAC while the Cougars drop to 28-15 and the Tigers move to a 37-8 overall record in 2010.

Game One vs. Columbia College
Columbia College didn't waste any time getting runs on the board as they tallied three runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the first inning. The Blazers struck for two runs to breakdown the Cougars lead in the top of the second inning with the aid of three hits. Tiffany Ansely hit a double to center field and Heather Pace hit a single down the left field line advancing Ansley to third. Kayla Maldonado pinch ran for H. Pace and stole second followed by Rian O'Bannon who hit a 2 RBI single to center field plating Maldonado and Ansley to make it 3-2.

Belhaven added on two more runs in the top of the third when Lizzy Hess scored on a passed ball and Jessica Eggold came in on Ansley's RBI double accounting for the second run in the third inning. The Blazers O'Bannon tripled to right field while Katie Sanders hit a single to left field to bat in O'Bannon in the fourth while Eggold contributed a two run single through the right side to cap a three run fourth frame.

The Cougars put their final run of the game on the board in the bottom of the fourth with the assistance of three hits. Belhaven went on to overpower Columbia College as Britney Webb stole home in the sixth inning to give the Blazers an 8-4 win.

O'Bannon led the Blazers at the plate with a pair of hits and had two runs batted in. Eggold went 1 for 4 with two RBI's while Ansley and Sanders tallied an RBI each. Webb ran every time she got an opportunity as she collected three more stolen bases against the Cougars. Sarah Burns got the win for Belhaven in the circle pitching the last 6.2 innings allowing one run on four hits with seven strikeouts.

Kacey Rehagne suffered the loss for Columbia College surrendering eight hits and seven of the eight runs scored.

Game Two vs. Olivet Nazarene University
Belhaven jumped on the board promptly as Christina Jaques grounded out to third giving Webb access to home plate in the first inning. Rachel Wright then scored an unearned run in the second inning making the score 2-0. The Tigers answered back in the third with one run as Bethany Holaway scored on a wild pitch.

In the fourth, Webb hit an RBI single to right field to plate Wright giving the Blazers a 3-1 advantage. Belhaven added three more runs as Eggold, Ansley, and Jaques crossed home plate in the top of the seventh on three hits. Olivet Nazarene put up a fight in the bottom of the seventh and scored three runs on four hits, but it was not enough as the Blazers edged the Tigers 6-4.

Sarah Burns took her second win of the day pitching 6.2 innings allowing only one run on four hits with five strikeouts. Burns is now 21-3 in 2010. Jordan Reynolds got the loss for Olivet Nazarene by firing all seven innings giving up six runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. The Blazers were impressive at the plate in game two as Ansley and H. Pace led the offense going two for four at the plate with one run batted in apiece. Webb and Jaques each had one RBI for Belhaven.

Baker had a hit for the Tigers and three runs batted in followed by Reynolds with three hits. Katie Hannagan, Holaway, and Shelley Durante each had a hit for Olivet Nazarene.

After Saturday's games, Webb leads the Blazers with has a total of 68 stolen bases in 73 attempts, 62 RBI's, and 73 hits in the 2010 season.

Belhaven will travel to the University of Mobile on Tuesday afternoon in a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader beginning at 3 PM.
