Jackson, Ms-The Belhaven University women's basketball team fell behind early in the contest and could never catch up falling to Southern University of New Orleans Saturday night in Rugg Arena 65-54. The loss drops the Blazers record to 13-12 overall and 4-10 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. SUNO goes to 12-8 overall and 6-8 in the GCAC.
SUNO scored the first eight points of the game in the opening 3:10 of the contest on a pair of free throws by Tyesha Robinson, two lay ups by LaTiondra Smith, and a lay up by LaNika Collins. Belhaven could not find a rhythm as they shot 23.5 percent from the field and 20 percent from the three point line in the first half.
The Blazers scored their first points of the game on a lay up by senior
Jira Williams off an assist by
Courtney Ward with 14:37 on the clock. Belhaven broke the lead down to within four points 8-12 on an outside jumper by Ward with 10:54 left in the first half. However, the Knights went on a 6-0 run with 7:02 left making the score 18-8. SUNO stayed on top throughout the rest of the first half and went into the locker room with a 26-20 lead.
The Blazers shot a little bit better in the second half, but it wasn't enough to get back into the contest as SUNO pulled away for the win 65-54. The closest the Blazers got to SUNO in the second half was within seven points at 50-57 on a lay up by Williams with 3:20 left in the game. Belhaven attempted six three point shots in the final 20 minutes but could get only one of those shots to fall. The Blazers were also hurt by turnovers committing a total of 17 in the game.
Belhaven was led by
Octavia Mullins with 14 points followed by
Karli Kenley with 13 points and five rebounds. Ward led the Blazers with eight assists and
Brittany Carr had a nice night on the boards as she led the team with 12 rebounds in the contest. Ward continued to play aggressive on defense by swiping four more steals in Saturday's game against SUNO.
As a team, the Blazers made 28.8 percent of their field goals and converted 55.6 percent of their free throw opportunities. Belhaven pulled down 50 total rebounds including 31 offensive rebounds and nine steals.
SUNO got an outstanding performance from Tyesha Robinson who had a game high 23 points and three assists followed by Jessica Adams who finished with 12 points. Smith led the Knights with a total of 12 rebounds in the contest.
Belhaven will try and regroup on Thursday night when they travel to Spring Hill to battle the Rams in GCAC action beginning at 5:30 PM.
