Blazers Bounce Southern Wesleyan in SSAC Opening Round

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven men's soccer team took the first step in post season play on Saturday afternoon with an impressive 4-0 win over Southern Wesleyan University in the opening round of the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament at H.T. Newell Field. The Blazers, ranked 10th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, scored three times in the first half and added another in the second to post the win and advance to the tournament semifinals.

Belhaven (15-1-2) struck for their first score in the eighth minute on a goal by Jose Robles which was his fourth of the season. Johnny Hayes set it up with a pass to Robles in the middle of the field and was credited with an assist. Achille Campion was the next Blazer to get in the scorebook with his third goal of the season in the 17th minute. Two assists were given on the goal as Guilherme Brandao played the ball beautifully up the sideline, found Stefan Fernandez in the middle of the field who then set up the shot for Campion. It was the first of two assists for Fernandez in game.

Aaron McLoughlin extended the lead to 3-0 with just over 15 minutes left in the first half with the first of his two goals in the game. Fernandez got his seventh assist of the season on the play and now has 24 points in 2010. The Blazers final goal of the match came in the 86th minute and once again it was McLoughin who did the honors. This time it was an unassisted score as he got behind the defense and blasted the ball into the back of the net to make it a 4-0 game. The goal was McLoughlin's seventh and he now has 19 points on the year.

Southern Wesleyan (7-8-3) could only muster three shots on goal and 12 total shots in the contest. Nicolas Luque led the Warriors in shot attempts with three while Carlos Gonzalez had a two of the team's three shots on goal. Leonardo Berenquel played all 90 minutes in net for Southern Wesleyan allowing all four goals while making five saves.

Campion unloaded a team high five shots for Belhaven with three being on goal followed by McLoughlin's three shots and two goals. Gautier Troch played all 90 minutes for Belhaven and mad three saves to run his record to 15-1-2 with eight shutouts to his credit. Belhaven has kept their opponents scoreless in 10 games this season and have outscored the opposition 56-10. Belhaven outshot Southern Wesleyan 18-12 Saturday afternoon.

Belhaven will play Southern Polytechnic State University in the SSAC Tournament semifinals on Thursday in Gulfport, MS at 3:00 PM. Southern Poly defeated Spring Hill College 3-0, Shorter came up with a 3-2 win over William Carey, and Mobile edged Lee 2-1 in the other opening round contests.
