Cleveland, MS-The Belhaven women's soccer team traveled to NCAA Division II Delta State University on Tuesday afternoon and came away with a 3-3 tie in double overtime. The Blazers looked strong and built a 3-1 lead early in the second half only to see the Statesman tie it with two unanswered goals late in the final period. Neither team could muster a goal in a pair of 10 minute overtime periods.
It didn't take long for Belhaven (1-6-1) to light up the scoreboard as
Krista Brizeno tallied an unassisted goal in the fifth minute. The goal gives her a team high of four on the season and it gave the Blazers a 1-0 edge. Later in the first half, Delta State came back to tie the match on a shot off the foot of Jackie Kelly. She was assisted by Jessie Reeder and with just under 10 minutes to play in the opening period the game was knotted at 1-1.
Belhaven fought back with two unanswered goals early in the second half with the first coming in the 54th minute of play.
Taylor DeLeon found the back of the net for the first time this season and Brizeno set it up with a corner kick and was credited with the assist making it a 2-1 Blazer lead. Mary Beth Webber added her third goal of the season in the 69th minute and all of a sudden Belhaven found themselves up 3-1.
However, Delta State (3-8-1) refused to go away and rallied for a pair of scores which would prove to be the final two goals of the game. The first was off the foot of Charlotte Benson which was set up by a corner kick from Payten Pearson in the 76th minute. Pearson then tied the match in the 79th minute with a goal of her own locking up the match at 3-3. Belhaven had three shots on goal in the overtime periods, but could not get one past Delta State goalie Megan Galloway who made the saves.
Brizeno anchored the Belhaven offense unloading nine total shots with three of them being on goal. She had one goal and one assist in the game.
Christin Kaim had five shots with four being on goal. As a team, Belhaven had a slight edge in shots at 18-16 and shots on goal at 10-8.
Saje Pernie started in net for the Blazers and played the first half allowing one goal with four saves.
Sarai Long played the final 75 minutes and took the decision in net as she surrendered two goals with one save running her record to 1-3-1 this season.
Delta State was led by Pearson who fired nine shots with three on goal. Pearson had a goal and an assist for the Statesmen. Galloway played all 120 minutes in net and made seven saves with three goals given up. Galloway now owns a season record of 0-3-1 in 2010.
Belhaven will be back in action on Friday when they travel to NCAA Division II Harding University for another non-conference contest. The match is scheduled to get underway at 6:00 PM.
