Jackson, MS-The Belhaven men's soccer team remained unscathed in Southern States Athletic Conference play Tuesday night by picking up a 2-1 win over Faulkner University at H.T. Newell Field. The Blazers, ranked 6th in the latest NAIA Top 25, are in a first place tie in the SSAC West division with Mobile as each team boasts a conference record of 3-0-1. The Rams dominated Auburn University-Montgomery on Tuesday night 4-1.
Belhaven (14-1-1, 3-0-1 SSAC) notched the first goal of the night in the 17th minute as
Guilherme Brandao connected on his team leading 12th goal of the season. Brandao found the back right corner of the goal from 20 yards out to put the Blazers in front 1-0. In the 33rd minute,
Jose Robles lofted a header shot past goalkeeper Kevin Saxby which pushed the Belhaven advantage to 2-0.
Aaron McLoughlin earned his fifth assist of the season on the Robles score and at that point the Blazers had the momentum.
Faulkner (5-7-4, 0-4 SSAC), despite being outshot 14-1 in the first half fought hard to keep the game close. Saxby made four of his five saves in the first period to keep the Eagles within striking distance at halftime. Faulkner then made things interesting in the 59th minute as Sidaly Toure got inside the box and knocked in his fifth goal of the season to trim the Blazer lead to 2-1.

Gautier Troch made the save of the match late in the second period when Rodrigo Pontes made a bid to tie the contest in the 85th minute. Troch dove and deflected the ball away from the net to preserve the Blazers slim 2-1 lead. The Eagles had two final shots in the closing minutes as Dexter Marufu's attempt went wide left at the 88:30 mark followed by a Joe Hastings volley that sailed high with only 10 seconds left in the game.
Belhaven had the advantage in total shots at 22-7 with a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. The Blazers consistently kept the ball in the Faulkner zone especially in the first half.
Achille Campion led Belhaven in total shot attempts with seven including four on goal followed by
Guilherme Brandao who had three total shots and a goal. Brandao now has 30 points this season to go along with his team leading 12 goals.
Troch earned the win in net for Belhaven and thanks to a pair of saves runs his record to 14-1-1 this season. Saxby took the loss for the Eagles and falls to 4-6-4 in 2010.
Belhaven will be back in action on Saturday in their final regular season and SSAC game of 2010 against William Carey University at H.T. Newell Field.
