Lady Blazers Notch First Win of the Season

Official Stats
Clinton, MS-The Belhaven women's soccer team picked up their first victory of the 2009 season Friday afternoon with a 2-0 victory over Mississippi College (1-1). The Lady Blazers (1-1) outshot the Lady Choctaws 23-4 and were impressive in all facets of the game.

Belhaven went on the attack from the opening kickoff and recorded their first shot in the eighth minute of the first half which went wide off the foot of Dana Sullivan. The Lady Blazers kept the pressure on attempting six more shots before Nicole Trawick found the back of the net on the teams' eighth attempt of the half to make it 1-0 Belhaven. Mallory Hodges was credited with her first assist in 2009 after dribbling through traffic in the middle of the field to find an open Trawick for the score. For Trawick, it was her second goal of the season and she now has a total of four points on the year.

The game remained 1-0 until the 79th minute when Dana Sullivan went top shelf finding the top corner of the goal on a shot that glanced of the fingertips of Mississippi College goalie Elizabeth Beatty. It was Sullivan's first goal of the year and gave the Lady Blazers a commanding 2-0 lead. Belhaven then kept the Lady Choctaw offense at bay for the remainder of the game and away from the goal to secure the victory.

Belhaven goalkeeper Jessica Eggold faced only four shots the entire game and made one save in route to her first win in net for the Lady Blazers. Sara Benson and Nicole Trawick each had five shots in the game followed by Dana Sullivan and Krista Brizeno with four a piece. Reagan Eastwood had the best scoring opportunity for Mississippi College, but had her only shot of the day turned away at point blank range by Eggold.

The Lady Blazers, now 1-1 on the season, return to action at home in “The Bowl” Saturday afternoon against East Texas Baptist University. The kickoff is slated for 3:00 PM.
