Blazers Play Spring Hill to a 2-2 Double Overtime Tie

Official Stats
Mobile, AL-The Belhaven women's soccer opened their Gulf Coast Athletic Conference schedule at Spring Hill College Wednesday afternoon and came away with a 2-2 double overtime tie with the Badgers. It was the second time the Blazers have gone two extra periods and ended up with a deadlocked score. Belhaven and Millsaps battled to a 0-0 tie back on September 18th.

The first half was dominated by both defenses as neither team could crack the scoreboard. Belhaven (4-3-2, 0-0-1) goalkeeper Jessica Eggold made two of her three saves in the opening 45 minutes while Spring Hill (4-4-1, 0-0-1) goalie Emma Pitchford notched three first period saves. The Blazers outshot the Badgers in total shots 6-4 and had a couple of late first half shots on goal by Christin Kaim and Dana Sullivan.

Nine minutes into the second half Belhaven struck for their first goal of the match off the foot of Kaim. Kaim was able to get behind the Spring Hill defense setting up a one on one center shot against Pitchford. Kaim blasted the ball past her and into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Blazers.

The lead would not last long as Spring Hill responded with a goal of their own less than two minutes later. Lara Menke was able to get in close to the goal and headed in the ball off an assist by Sarah Uptmor to knot the match at 1-1.

The match stayed at 1-1 until Nicole Trawick scored an unassisted goal to vault the Blazers back into the lead at 2-1 with 5:04 remaining in regulation. It was Trawick's eighth goal of the season and gives her 16 points which is tops on the team in both categories. Unfortunately for Belhaven, Spring Hill answered quickly once again with the game tying goal less than a minute later. With 4:15 left to go in the second period, Jade Beason worked the ball up the field and sliced it past Eggold evening the score at 2-2.

Beason's goal would prove to be the final score of the match for either team. Belhaven outshot the Badgers 5-1 in the overtime periods as Pitchford made three of her six saves in the extra frames. The Blazers had the last shot in the final seconds of the second overtime, but Sarah Benson's attempt was blocked by the Spring Hill defense preserving the 2-2 tie.

Overall, the Blazers had the edge in total shots at 16-11 and shots on goal at 6-3. Trawick led the team with a match high of six shots, one goal, and three shots on goal. Sullivan had three shots on goal and Kaim had two shots at the net including a goal. Eggold made three saves in the contest and runs her record in net to 4-2-2. Beason led the Badgers with four total shots and a goal while Uptmor attempted three shots and tallied an assist. Menke had two shots and scored one of the two Spring Hill goals. Badger goalkeeper Emma Pitchford made six saves in Wednesday's match.

Belhaven takes the field again on Saturday when they travel to Shorter College for a non-conference match with the Hawks. The kickoff is slated for 12:00 PM.
