McKenzie, TN-The Belhaven women's soccer team ran into one of the top ranked teams in the country on Friday afternoon losing to Martin Methodist College by a final score of 2-1. The Red Hawks are ranked 8
th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll. The goals by Martin Methodist ended Belhaven's five match shutout streak.
The Red Hawks scored the first goal of the game in the 26
th minute on a goal by Tatiane Alexio that was set up by Shannon Walter. The Blazers responded 11 minutes later when
Christin Kaim beat the Martin Methodist defense for an unassisted goal. It was her fourth goal of the season and points seven and eight of 2009. Kaim is the team's second leading scorer behind
Nicole Trawick who has seven goals so far this year.
The match remained tied up until the 81
st minute when Kelly Glaser put Martin Methodist back on top with a goal to make the score 2-1. The assist was credited to Nicole O'Donnell. The Blazers had a few more chances in the final minutes, but Red Hawk goalkeeper Hanit Schwarz turned away two shots and
Sarah Benson had one final shot go wide of the mark with six seconds to play as Martin Methodist held on for the win.
Belhaven was outshot in the match 20-18, but both teams were even in shot attempts in the second period with 10 apiece. Schwarz made six saves for the Red Hawks and goalkeeper
Jessica Eggold made 10 saves in the match as she suffers her first loss in net this season for Belhaven. The Martin Methodist defense did a good job containing Trawick who did not attempt a shot in the match.
