Jackson, MS-The Belhaven men's soccer team got only one goal on 27 shots, but one is all they needed in a 1-0 victory over NCAA Division II Delta State University on a soggy Wednesday night at H.T. Newell field. The Blazers turned in a great defensive performance and Belhaven goalkeeper
Zach Wallace made some key saves to preserve the win.
The lone Belhaven (4-2-1) goal was blasted in by
Sergei Yepishin who came in off the bench to notch his first goal of the season. Yepishin rebounded a missed shot by
John Kehoe that ricocheted of Delta State (2-5-1) goalkeeper Flavio Romero and he quickly fired it past Romero for the score. Kehoe was credited with his team leading fourth assist of the season on the score which came in the 36
th minute of the match.
The Blazers had a number of other chances to score in the game, but could not find the back of the net with any of their other 26 shot attempts. Romero recorded a total of nine saves for Delta State and helped keep his team in the contest.
The Statesman finally got some offense going late in the match when they threatened to tie the score with two shots in the final minute and fifteen seconds. Will Fisher nearly knotted the game with a header following a free kick which was set up by a Belhaven foul. Fisher's shot was tipped away by Wallace as he leaped in the air to make the save. Delta State got one more crack at the goal with another header attempt by Kyle Adams with 53 seconds to go that was blocked before making it to the goal giving the Blazers the 1-0 victory.
Belhaven outshot the Statesmen 27-10 in total shots and owned a 10-6 advantage in the shots on goal category. Wallace tallied six saves in route to his fourth win in net for the Blazers this season. Individually for Belhaven, Kehoe and
Jose Morales attempted the most shots with four each. Matthew Baker and David Horstmann led the Statesman in shot attempts with two apiece.
The Blazers will return to action on Saturday when the host Martin Methodist College (TN) at H.T. Newell Field. The kickoff is slated for 1:00 PM.
