Jackson, MS-The Belhaven men's soccer team shutout Texas College 4-0 Saturday night at H.T. Newell Field on the strength of a hat trick by
Juan Rodriguez. The Blazers, who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, have won three in a row and are now 3-1 on the season.
Rodriguez put the Blazers on the board in the 19
th minute on his third goal of the season as he fired it past Steer goalkeeper Pedro Lopez to make it 1-0 Belhaven. The Blazers would strike again about nine minutes later on
Jose Robles first goal of the 2009 season.
Alan Hannon got credit for his second assist of the year and at that point Belhaven owned a 2-0 lead.
The Texas College defense tightened up and kept the Blazers off the board for the remainder of the first half and through the first 26 minutes of the second period. Rodriguez would then strike again on another unassisted goal in the 71
st minute this time getting it past goalkeeper Matthew Rangel giving Belhaven a commanding 3-0 lead. Four minutes later Rodriguez notched the hat trick when
Matt Clifton delivered a perfect pass that Rodriguez then blasted into the back of the net for his third goal of the game thus extending Belhaven's lead to 4-0. The Blazer defense would then hold on for the shutout victory over the Steers.
Rodriguez now has five goals and 10 points on the season following his performance against Texas College Saturday night. He had a total of six shots with four being on goal. Hannon is now second on the team in points with four after picking up an assist in the contest. Robles added a goal and Clifton notched his first assist of the season. As a team, the Blazers outshot the Steers 15-2 as the offense kept the ball on Texas College's side of the field most of the night.
Zach Wallace got the start and the win in goal for Belhaven as he played the first 78 minutes running his record in net to 3-1 this season. Pedro Lopez played the first half and suffered the loss for the Steers.
Belhaven will return to the field on Friday in a match against Embry-Riddle University at the University of Mobile Tournament. The game is slated to get underway at 5:00 PM. The Blazers will then meet up with the University of Texas at Brownsville on Saturday night beginning at 5:00 PM.
