Monroe, LA-The Belhaven women's soccer team kicked off the regular season on Saturday afternoon with a 5-1 loss at NCAA Division I University of Louisiana-Monroe. Saturday's contest was also the 2009 opener for the Lady Warhawks.
The Lady Blazers (0-1) kept Louisiana-Monroe (1-0) off the board for the majority of the first half, but the Lady Warhawks were able to break down Belhaven's defense at the 38 minute mark. Tiffany Bombard was granted a corner kick and a few seconds later had regained possession of the ball and made it count by finding the back of the net to make it a 1-0 game. Elissa Fralicks and Lindsey Tubbs got credit for the assists after having set up Bombards' shot on goal.
Belhaven got back into the game with just over eight minutes gone by in the second half on Nicole Trawicks' first goal of the season to knot the score at 1-1. Trawick rebounded her own missed shot off the post and fired it in for the score. The game would not stay tied for long as ULM struck back to regain the lead at 2-1 on Tubbs first goal of the season. The goal was once again setup off a corner kick by Bombard.
The Lady Warhawks seized the momentum at that point and reeled off three more second half goals to pull away for the win. Tubbs, Stacey Carmack, and Kylie McIntyre were credited with ULM's final three goals of the contest.
Louisiana-Monroe outshot the Lady Blazers 21-11 which included an 11-4 shot advantage in the second half. Trawick had six of the 11 shots on goal for the Lady Blazers. Belhaven freshman goalkeeper
Sarai Long was under fire all game long, but picked up six saves in her collegiate debut against a solid NCAA Division I team.
The Lady Blazers return to action in an Exhibition game at the University of Montevallo on August 25
th before facing off against Mississippi College in their second regular season game of the year. Belhaven's road match with the Lady Choctaws is scheduled for September 4
th at 3:00 PM.
