Blazers Season Comes to a Close at LSU-Shreveport

Box Score
Shreveport, LA-The firepower of the LSU-Shreveport offense was too much for the Belhaven men's basketball team as their season ended on Saturday night with a 94-75 loss to the Pilots in the semi-finals of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

LSUS went 15 for 25 from behind the three point line which equates to a 60 percent shooting percentage from long distance. Overall, the Pilots made 57.7 percent of their shots from the field as the pulled away for the victory and advance to the GCAC Tournament Championship game against Spring Hill College Tuesday night. The Pilots improve to 21-11 on the season while the Blazers close out the 2008-2009 campaign at 18-13.

Saturday's game was all LSUS from the outset as they quickly established a commanding 33-7 lead with 9:53 to go in the first half. The Pilots made nine of their 15 treys during that stretch of the game. About two minutes later, LSUS would build a 29 point advantage which would prove to be their largest lead of the night. Belhaven managed to trim the deficit to 20 points at 51-31 with 1:14 remaining in the first half on a basket by Krayleon Winston and the score remained that way when the halftime buzzer sounded.

The Blazers were able to cut the lead to 14 points with 15:58 to play in the game on a pair of Winston free throws making the score 55-41. However, the Pilots pushed the advantage to 23 points with just under 10 minutes to go in the contest. During the next six minutes the Blazers gave it their all to make one last run and closed the gap to 15 points with 3:07 left but it was too little too late. LSUS proceeded to hit some key free throws and two more three pointers down the stretch to cruise to the victory.

Nathaniel Roche' recorded his sixth double double of the season with a team high 15 points and a game high 12 rebounds to lead Belhaven. Krayleon Winston had 13 points along with Iman Walcott who had a nice night in his final game in a Blazer uniform. Hunter Jeffery tossed in 10 points and Korey Whiting also had 10 points in his final game.

As a team, Belhaven hit just 37.5 percent of their shots from the field and made only 21.7 percent of their triple tries. The Blazers were outrebounded by the Pilots 42-33 in an all around well played game by LSUS.

The Pilots were led by Tyrone Hamilton with 24 points and 11 assists in route to the double double. Hamilton also connected on 7 of his 11 three point shot attempts. Mike Pilgrim added 16 points and a team high nine rebounds followed by Clarke Jackson with 11 points and Jared Stevenson with 10 points on the night.

Despite the loss, the Blazers have nothing to hang their heads about having made it to the conference semi-finals despite some tough injuries down the stretch. Belhaven has a ton of talent returning next year and hopefully the experience gained by some of the younger players this season will pay off in 2009-2010.
