Walcott Leads Blazers Past William Carey

Hattiesburg, MS-On the strength of a career high 25 points from Iman Walcott, the Belhaven men's basketball team locked up a 73-70 victory at William Carey University Saturday night in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action. The Blazers are 12-8 overall and 4-5 in the GCAC which places them in fourth in the conference standings.

There is a three way tie for second between Xavier, Loyola, and Tougaloo who are each 6-3. LSU-Shreveport is alone in first place at 7-2. Tonight's win means the Blazers are only two games out of second and one game behind Dillard University for third place. William Carey is now 7-12 and 2-7 in the GCAC after Saturday's setback against the Blazers.
 
Things didn't look good for Belhaven at halftime with the Blazers trailing 33-30 coming out for the second half. The offense came together during the final 20 minutes of play and outscored the Crusaders 43-37 in the second half. Belhaven had built a nine point lead in the latter part of the second on solid inside play by Walcott, Korey Whiting, and Nathaniel Roche'. William Carey hit some key shots down the stretch to make it close at the end of the contest, but Belhaven held on to secure the victory.
 
Walcott had a career high 25 points which eclipsed his previous career high of 21 points during the 2007 season. Walcott also grabbed five rebounds in the Blazers win. Roche' finished with 16 points followed by Phillip Holmes with 10 points. Whiting also had 10 points and 10 rebounds for another double double. It was Whiting's team leading seventh double double of the season.
 
As a team, Belhaven drilled 51.1 percent of their shots from the field, many of which came from point blank range. The Blazers were also effective from the free throw line with one of their best nights at the line converting on 22 of 27 shots at the charity stripe. Belhaven had a slight edge on the boards outrebounding the Crusaders 30-28.
 
William Carey had three players reach double figures in scoring led by Marcus Spann who had 21 points. Anthony Wilcher concluded the night with 20 points followed by Johnathan Woodland who had 15 points and a team high eight rebounds. The Crusaders knocked down 49.1 percent of their shots from the field and dialed up 58.8 percent of their shots from three point land.
 
Belhaven returns home on Thursday night to battle the Badgers of Spring Hill College in another Gulf Coast Athletic Conference matchup. The tip-off is slated for 7:30 PM.
