Blazers Fall to Mobile in GCAC Semifinals

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven women's soccer team lost a tough match to the University of Mobile on Thursday night in the semifinals of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference 1-0 in OT at H.T. Newell Field. The Blazers outshot Mobile 13 -9 in the match and had a 7-1 edge in shots in the second half, but couldn't muster a score on goalkeeper Anna Maddox.

Belhaven (7-6-3) was aggressive in the opening few minutes of the match keeping the Rams pinned deep in their own end of the field. Nicole Trawick had a couple of good looks at the net in the opening 45 minutes, but one attempt sailed wide left and the other was saved by Maddox. Mobile (8-8-1) fought back in the later stages of the first half on a pair of shots by Terri McCreadie, but they were both turned away by Blazer goalkeeper Jessica Eggold.

Both teams struggled to find their offense in the second period, especially Mobile who only attempted one shot in the final 45 minutes of regulation. The Rams only look at the net in the second half came with 13 seconds on the clock from Kassie Ruff. The shot on goal was saved by Eggold sending the match into overtime.

Belhaven had a hard time keeping Mobile out their end of the field as the Rams turned up the heat on the offensive side of the ball in the overtime frame. Mobile was finally able to cash in for the only goal of the game with 3:54 left in overtime. Christy Lachappelle took a pass from Terri McCreadie and fired it past Eggold for the game winning goal. McCreadie was credited with the assist for helping setup the play. For Lachappelle, it was her seventh goal of the 2009 season.

Trawick attempted the most shots for the Blazers with four including one on goal followed by Christin Kaim with three shots and one on goal. Eggold made four saves in just over 96 minutes of work in net, but suffered the loss which was her fifth of the season. Lachappelle and McCreadie paced the Rams offense with three shots apiece. Maddox earned the win and the shutout in net for Mobile with three saves.

Mobile moves on to face William Carey University in the GCAC Finals on Saturday at 1:00 PM in Hattiesburg. The Crusaders knocked off Spring Hill 3-0 in Thursday's other semifinal contest. The Blazers will now wait to see if they are granted an At-Large berth in the NAIA Unaffiliated Tournament which is scheduled to take place in Dallas, TX November 10th-13th.
