Jackson, MS-The Belhaven men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 OT loss to the University of Mobile Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference tournament at H.T. Newell Field. The Rams got the game winner off the foot of Henrique Bertoli with just over three minutes to play in overtime.
The game was scoreless going into halftime although both teams had some quality looks at the goal. Belhaven's (10-4-2) best scoring opportunity in the first half was a shot by
Juan Rodriguez in the 28th minute that ricocheted off the post and out of play. Blazer goalie
Gautier Troch ended up turning away three shots by the Rams in the first period. Mobile (7-10) was aggressive on offense the entire afternoon and in the first half held an 11-2 advantage in total shots.
In the second half, the teams battled to a draw through the first 25 minutes until the Rams broke the scoreless tie with what would prove to be the first of two goals scored by Henrique Bertoli. Mobile was able to load the box and pressure the Blazer defense allowing Bertoli to find some space for the shot. Sam Blackburn was credited with the assist on the pass to Bertoli.
Belhaven fought back to tie the game in the 80th minute on
Matt Clifton's third goal of the year.
Sebastian Eriksson got the assist, his first of the year, with a great pass up the field to find Clifton open behind the Mobile defense. Clifton then beat goalie Jason Williams who had come out to challenge the shot. The goal knotted the score at 1-1 and got the largest crowd of the season back into the game.
The score remained tied at the end of regulation forcing a ten minute sudden death overtime period. The Blazers got a shot attempt about two minutes into overtime by
Sergei Yepishin that went wide left, but that the closest Belhaven would come to tallying a goal the rest of the game. With just over three minutes to go on the clock, Bertoli won it for the Rams on a breakaway maneuvering the ball around Blazer goalie
Gautier Troch who had come out to challenge Bertoli. That left the net wide open for Bertoli who kicked it in for the win.
Alan Hannon led Belhaven in total shots with four followed by Yepishin and Clifton who had two apiece. The Blazers were outshot 22-12 by Mobile and the Rams also had the edge in corner kicks at 6-3. Troch made six saves for Belhaven, but suffered his first loss of the season falling to 4-1-1 in net. Williams recorded three saves in net for the Rams to secure the 2-1 victory.
