Blazers Suffer 2-1 Loss at Shorter

Rome, GA-The Belhaven women's soccer team could not overcome two second half goals in a 2-1 loss at Shorter College Saturday afternoon. Belhaven jumped out to an early lead, but goals in the 70th and 75th minutes by the Hawks proved to be the difference in the game.
                                 
Sarah Benson scored the lone goal for Belhaven (4-4-2) in the 27th minute for her first score of the season. Christin Kaim got the assist for the Blazers which was her first of the 2009 season. Shorter (5-4) struck for their first goal in the second half on a penalty kick by Pauline Van Der Henst to knot the score at 1-1. Five minutes later Candace Edwards knocked in what proved to be the game winner for the Hawks on an unassisted goal to make it 2-1.
 
Shorter outshot Belhaven 22-13 which included a 13-5 edge in shots in the second half. Benson led the offense for the Blazers with five total shots including four on goal. Edwards had six total shots to pace the Shorter attack.
 
Jessica Eggold took the loss in net for Belhaven as she played all 90 minutes recording six saves. Taylor Hays got the win for the Hawks and turned away three Blazer shot attempts.
 
The Blazers return to the field on Friday when they travel to Lyon College in Arkansas for another non-conference matchup. The kickoff is slated for 3:00 PM.
