Blazers and Hawks Battle to 1-1 Draw

Rome, GA-The Belhaven men's soccer team traveled to Shorter College on Saturday afternoon and played the Hawks to 1-1 double overtime tie. The Blazers held a 1-0 for the majority of the game, but Shorter scored late in the second half to tie the match and force the overtime periods.
 
Belhaven (6-2-2) struck for their only goal in the 15th minute as Juan Rodriguez slammed the ball past goalkeeper Johnny Paletar for his team leading 10th goal of the year. Sergei Yepishin got the assist on the play which was his first.
 
Shorter (6-4-1) would not score until the 83rd minute as Ryan Timberlake got past the Blazer defense for the score. Sebastian Stilhler was credited with the assist for the Hawks. Neither team would score in the first or second overtime as the game officially went into the books as a 1-1 tie.
 
Shorter outshot Belhaven 22-12, but the Blazers had the only two shot attempts in the overtime frames. Rodriguez led the offense with five shots with two being on goal. Timberlake led the Hawks in total shots with five on Saturday afternoon. Blazer goalkeeper Zach Wallace made four saves in 90 minutes of work in net. Paletar made three saves in the match for Shorter College.
 
Belhaven, who is ranked 19th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, will be back in action on Wednesday when they play host to William Carey University in a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference matchup. The kickoff is slated for 7:00 PM at H.T. Newell Field.
