Hattiesburg, MS-The Belhaven women's soccer team lost a tough match to Gulf Coast Athletic Conference rival and fourth ranked William Carey University 4-0 at Crusader Field on Tuesday night. The Crusaders used three first half goals to seize momentum and pull away for the victory.
William Carey's (14-1-1, 3-0 GCAC) first score came in the fourth minute on a score by Aimi Beresford making the score 1-0. Hannah Johnson and Jeana Erickson were both credited with assists on the play. Just over five minutes later the Crusaders got on the board again thanks to a goal by Natalia Nino. It was the first of Nino's two goals on the night and the assist went to Beresford. William Carey extended the lead to 3-0 just 19 minutes into the match when Gemma Metcalf found the back of the net for the goal. Nino picked up the assist on the play.
Belhaven (7-5-3, 2-1-1 GCAC) held off the Crusaders for the rest of the half, but the damage had already been done. The Blazers could not muster much offense in the first or second half with most of the contest being played on Belhaven's side of the field. William Carey added one more goal in the 50th minute on Nino's second score of the contest. Metcalfe, who got the games third goal, earned the assist.
The Blazers were outshot in the match 20-7 and the Crusaders held a big edge in shots on goal at 10-4. Belhaven goalkeeper
Jessica Eggold made six saves, but allowed all four goals as she falls to 7-4-3 in net this season. Crusader goalie Jackie DeNova made four saves in 90 minutes of work for William Carey.
Sarah Benson led the Blazers in shots with two while five others had one shot apiece. Beresford fired six shots while Nino and Erickson ripped off four shots apiece for the Crusaders.
Belhaven will return to action in the GCAC tournament on Thursday November 5th. Time and location are yet to be determined.
