Blazers Shutout Harding University on Senior Day

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven women's soccer team pitched a shutout on Friday afternoon with a 3-0 non-conference win over NCAA Division II Harding University at H.T. Newell Field. Friday's contest was also the final regular season home game and this year's seniors; Jessica Eggold, Mallory Hodges, Evelyn Torres, Dana Sullivan, Sarah Benson, Nicole Trawick, and Samantha Breland were honored prior to the game.
 
Belhaven (7-4-3) scored two of their three goals in the opening period with the first coming in the 18th minute. Nicole Trawick scored the first of her two goals in the contest taking a pass from Christin Kaim and firing the ball past Bison goalkeeper Hannah Douglas to put the Blazers up 1-0. The assist for Kaim was her second of the 2009 season.
 
Belhaven extended the advantage to 2-0 courtesy of Dana Sullivan's four goal of the season in the 31st minute. Kimber Dear picked up her first point with an assist on the play and at that point the Blazers had seized control of the match.
 
With just over 31 minutes gone by in the second half, Nicole Trawick found the back of the next for her second goal of the match and team leading 12th of the season. Trawick now has 25 points and three game winning goals in 2009. Harding (3-9-2) had some looks at the goal throughout the course of the match, but Blazer goalie Jessica Eggold was up to the challenge with seven saves on the afternoon. It was her sixth shutout of the season and improved her record in net to 7-3-3.
 
As a team, Belhaven made the most of their opportunities scoring the three goals with just six total shots in the match. Harding actually held the advantage in shot attempts at 11-6 which included a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. Brianna Meek and Lauren Sharf led the Bison in shots with three each while Trawick paced the Belhaven offensive attack with three shots and two goals. Hannah Douglas got the start in net for Harding allowing two of the three goals while picking up two saves.
 
The Blazers will close out the regular season on Tuesday night at rival William Carey University in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action. The match is slated to get underway at 7:00 PM.
