Jackson, MS-The Belhaven men's soccer team was firing on all cylinders Friday afternoon in a 5-2 non-conference victory over NCAA Division II Harding University at H.T. Newell Field. It was the second highest scoring game of the season for the Blazers, who are ranked 24
th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll. Belhaven scored a season high six goals in a 6-4 win against Lambuth University back on September 29
th.
Harding (4-12) actually struck for the first goal of the match just three and a half minutes into the game. Belhaven goalie
Gautier Troch came out after the ball, but could not get to it in time to stop Connor Galloway who took a pass from teammate Josh Ireland and sent it into the net to put the Bison up 1-0.
Belhaven (10-3-2) got on the board with the first of what would be five consecutive goals in the 27
th minute.
Juan Rodriguez connected on the first of his two goals in the match off an assist by
Markus Lemstrom to knot the score at 1-1. The Blazers then took the lead late in the first half on a header shot by
Jose Robles that found its way past Bison goalie Andrew Flesher to make it 2-1 Belhaven.
Alan Hannon was given the assist after working the ball deep into the Harding zone finding Robles for the open shot. It was Robles's second goal and Hannon's four assist of the season.
Belhaven extended the lead to 3-1 in the 57th minute on an unassisted goal by Rodriguez. The score gives Rodriguez a team leading 15 goals and 33 points on the season. He also has an outstanding shooting percentage of 27.8 percent on 54 total shots this year with 61 percent of those shots being on goal.
The Blazers then put the match out of reach at 5-1 with back to back goals by Hannon in the 66
th and 70
th minutes of the contest. Hannon was assisted on the first goal by
Stefan Fernandez and then Fernandez and
Aaron McLoughlin both picked up assists on Hannon's second score. For Hannon, the two goals give him a total of four on the year. Fernandez now has four assists and McLoughlin has three assists and 11 points for Belhaven in 2009.
Harding tacked on a late goal in the 79th minute by Charles Zacheaus with the assist going to Galloway. However, it was too little too late for the Bison as Troch and the Blazer defense kept Harding off the board for the rest of the match. Troch picked up the win in net for Belhaven and improves to a perfect 4-0-1 on the season. Troch recorded four saves on Friday afternoon and now has 17 on the season. Flesher had 10 saves for Harding, but gave up all five of Belhaven's goals in 90 minutes of work.
As a team, the Blazers had a huge edge in total shots at 29-7 and shots on goal at 15-6. The majority of the match was played on Harding's side of the field. Jamie Poole took the most shots for Belhaven with seven followed by Hannon and McLoughlin with five apiece. Galloway tallied two shots for Harding to pace the Bison in shot attempts.
Belhaven will close out the regular season at home on Tuesday night against Rust College beginning at 7:00 PM at H.T. Newell Field.
