Blazers Come From Behind to Beat Mobile

Jackson, MS-Trailing the University of Mobile 1-0 in the second half, the Belhaven women's soccer team got a goal in the 54th minute to tie the match and then recorded the game winner with 1:15 left in overtime for a 2-1 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference victory over the Rams Tuesday night at H.T. Newell Field.
 
The opening 30 minutes of the match remained scoreless as both teams struggled to find the offense. Mobile (6-7-1, 1-1 GCAC) got on the board first on a goal by Missy Stovall with 14:23 remaining in the opening period. Stovall got behind the Blazer defense and then outmaneuvered goalkeeper Jessica Eggold who had come out to challenge the shot for the score.
 
The Rams held a 1-0 lead until the 54th minute when Nicole Trawick took a pass from Samantha Breland and fired it past Mobile goalie Anna Maddox for the goal. The goal was Trawick's team leading 10th on the season while Breland picked up her first assist. The score by Trawick gave Belhaven (6-4-3, 2-0-1) new life in the match and forced an overtime period with the score tied at 1-1.
 
The Blazers were finally able to put the game away with 1:15 left in overtime on Christin Kaim's seventh goal of 2009. Kaim got the ball deep in the Mobile zone and was able to steer the ball past Maddox for the game winner securing a 2-1 Belhaven victory.
 
As a team, the Blazers outshot the Rams 16-12 which included a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Breland led the team in shots with five followed by Sarah Benson who had four. Eggold made three saves in net for Belhaven to earn her sixth win of the season. Christy Lachappelle led Mobile in total shots with four while Stovall added three shots on the night. Maddox turned away three shots in goal for the Rams.
 
Belhaven will be back in action against Harding University on Friday afternoon at H.T. Newell Field beginning at Noon. It will be the final regular season home match in 2009.
