Jackson, MS-The Belhaven men's soccer team won for the third straight time and recorded their sixth shutout of the season with a 3-0 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference victory over Spring Hill College Tuesday night at H.T. Newell Field.
Belhaven (9-3-2, 3-1 GCAC) didn't waste much time by getting on the board with their first goal of the match in the fourth minute.
Juan Rodriguez found the back of the net for his 12
th goal of the season off an assist by
John Kehoe to put Belhaven in front of Spring Hill (3-11, 1-2 GCAC) 1-0. For Kehoe, it was his seventh assist in the 2009 season.
The Blazers added their second goal of the game in the 23
rd minute when
Aaron McLoughlin and
Markus Lemstrom teamed up for the score. It was McLoughlin's fourth goal of the year and Lemstrom's first assist of the 2009 campaign. The goal gave Belhaven a 2-0 lead and put them in control of the match. The Badgers made a couple of bids to get on the board in the first half, but Belhaven goalie
Gautier Troch made a pair of saves and Spring Hill's Zechariah Townsend had a header attempt glance off the post keeping the score at 2-0 in favor of the Blazers.
Belhaven then added an insurance goal in the 55 minute of the second half thanks to Rodriguez's second goal of the night and 13th of the season. McLoughlin recorded his second assist and 10th the point of the year. Rodriguez, with his two goals, now has a team high 29 points.
As a team, Belhaven outshot Spring Hill College 15-10 which included a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. Rodriguez led the offense with six shots and two goals while
Matt Clifton checked in with four shots on the night. Troch picked up four saves and the win in net for Belhaven playing the first 83 minutes of the match. Bryce Privett had three shots while Townsend and Colin Gasparovic had two shots apiece for the Badgers. Cory Bronenkamp allowed three goals and made three saves in net for Spring Hill.
Belhaven will return to the field on Friday afternoon when they host Harding University at H.T. Newell field. The kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 PM.
