Jackson, MS-The Belhaven men's soccer team pitched another shutout on Saturday night with a 1-0 victory over the University of Mobile in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action at H.T. Newell Field. The Blazers were outshot by the Rams 12-6, but a penalty kick goal with 1:17 left in overtime sealed the win.
The first half was a stalemate as both defenses came ready to play. Mobile (5-7, 1-1 GCAC) appeared to have a first half goal off the foot of Saulo Litterio, but it was waived off due to an offside penalty against the Rams. Belhaven (8-3-2, 2-1 GCAC) goalkeeper
Gautier Troch, who made his second consecutive start, made a couple of diving saves to keep the match scoreless. Troch tallied a total of four saves with all of them coming in the opening 45 minutes of play.
Belhaven struggled to get the offense going in the second half and could only muster two shots. Mobile kept the Blazers pinned down on their own side of the field for the majority of the second half. Belhaven's best look at the goal came in the 59
th minute on a shot by
Juan Rodriguez that sailed high of the net. Mobile's Robbie Ford had the last shot of the second half, but fortunately for the Blazers the ball went high as the final seconds ticked off the clock with the score 0-0 sending the match into overtime.
It appeared as though the contest was headed for a second overtime, but a foul on Ford of Mobile resulted in a penalty kick right in front of the Ram's net.
Alan Hannon took the shot with 1:17 on the clock and slid it past Mobile goalie Jason Williams for the game winner. It was Hannon's second goal of the season and gives him seven points in 2009.
As a team, Belhaven collected three shots on goal while Mobile recorded a total of four shots at the net. The Rams attempted 11 corner kicks in the game compared to only three for Belhaven. Troch made four saves and improves to 2-0-1 in net for the Blazers while Williams takes the loss for the Ram's after making two saves in Saturday's game.
Belhaven will take the field again on Tuesday night when they host Spring Hill College in another Gulf Coast Athletic Conference match which is slated to get underway at 7:00 PM from H.T. Newell Field.
