Blazers Blank LSU-Shreveport

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven women's soccer team picked up their first Gulf Coast Athletic Conference victory of the season on Tuesday afternoon at H.T. Newell with a 2-0 shutout of LSU-Shreveport. The Blazers looked sharp despite not having played for 10 days due to a pair of matches being cancelled because of weather conditions.
 
Belhaven (5-4-2, 1-0-1 in the GCAC) scored the only goals of the game in the first half of the match. The first score was recorded in the 32nd minute when a pass by Belhaven's Sarah Benson, which was intended for Dana Sullivan, deflected off of an LSU-Shreveport player and into the net to make it 1-0 Blazers. Belhaven tacked on goal number two in the 40th minute as Mallory Hodges found Sullivan open in the middle of the field for a breakaway attempt. Sullivan made the most of her opportunity as she blasted the ball past Pilot goalkeeper Torie Calhoun for the score extending the Blazers advantage to 2-0.
 
LSU-Shreveport (7-4-1, 1-2) had some opportunities on the offensive end themselves in the first period, but Belhaven goalie Jessica Eggold kept the ball out the net with five first half saves. Eggold ended up turning away a total of eight shots in the match. In the second half, the Blazer defense dug in and with the help of Eggold secured the 2-0 shutout.
 
The goal by Sullivan was her second of the year while Hodges and Benson eached picked up their second assists in 2009. Benson led the offense in shot attempts with five while Nicole Trawick recorded four total shots. As a team, the Blazers outshot the Pilots 17-13 with LSU-Shreveport holding the shots on goal edge 8-6.
 
Defensively, the eight saves for Eggold gives her 38 for the season and was the second highest save total in a match this season. Eggold had 10 saves in a loss to Martin Methodist College on September 25th.
 
Ashley Pope paced the Pilot offense with three total shots and Calhoun made four saves for the LSU-Shreveport defense.
 
The Blazers return to action on Saturday as they travel to Christian Brothers University in Memphis, TN. The kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
