Belhaven Tops Millsaps 76-57

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven men's basketball team racked up another win Saturday night defeating Millsaps College in Rugg Arena 76-57. The Blazers are 4-0 to begin the season due in part to another double double by Korey Whiting and an outstanding game by Roderick Wilson. Saturday's game was the season opener for Millsaps who received votes in the NCAA Division III top 25 poll.
 
Whiting had 18 points and a game high 11 rebound's while Wilson poured in a game high 20 points off the bench for Belhaven. It was Whiting's second consecutive game with 18 points and at least 11 rebounds.
 
It was a tight first half as neither team could establish a double digit lead. Millsaps built their largest first half advantage about three minutes into the game when Blake Martinez hit a trey to put the Majors up by five 7-2. The Majors did not give up the lead until a Roderick Wilson field goal with 11:34 to go in the first half put the Blazers up by one 13-12. That basket was the beginning of an 8-0 run by Belhaven to establish their largest lead of the first half 19-12. With about 1:30 to go in the first half Belhaven owned a six point lead 29-23. However, the Majors put together a mini 4-0 run pull within two at the break 29-27.
 
Korey Whiting had eight points in the first half to pace the offense while Julien Marion and Roderick Wilson each chipped in with six points apiece. Blake Martinez had 12 points for the Majors in the opening 20 minutes of play. As a team, the Blazers shot 43 percent from the field and hit on just two of their three point attempts. The Majors also knocked down 43 percent of their shots in the first half.
 
The opening minutes of the second mirrored the first half as both teams struggled to establish control. With just under 17 minutes to go, Belhaven began a 21-5 run over the next six minutes to build a 15 point lead. The advantage then grew to 20 with 8:04 play on a Roderick Wilson bucket making the score 61-41. The Majors would get no closer than 14 the rest of the way as Belhaven went on to lock up the 76-57 victory.
 
Phillip Holmes joined Whiting and Wilson in double figures with 10 points and four rebounds. He also blocked two Major shots in Saturday's game. As a team, Belhaven hit 49 percent of their shots for the game with a 54 percent shooting percentage in the second half. . The Blazers also forced 19 turnovers including 14 steals. Blake Martinez led the Millsaps attack with 17 points followed by Chris Ingle with 12 points and five rebounds.
 
Belhaven returns to action Tuesday night at Wesley College as they meet up with the Warriors for the second time this season. The Blazers came away with an 81-46 victory on November 4th. The tip-off is scheduled for 7 PM.
