Blazers Win Thriller in Season Opener Against Millsaps

Box Score

Jackson, Miss - The 2017 Belhaven football team opened the season against cross town rival Millsaps College in what would be a thriller all the way down to the final whistle.

Even with the playing conditions being wet and rainy, the Blazers were able to pass for more than 380 yards through the air.

The Blazers took a quick 1st quarter lead by a score of 21-7, but the game was far from over, as Millsaps struck back with a few quick scores to take a lead 29-28 half lead.

The Majors outscored the Blazers 22-7 in the second quarter. In the first half senior Wide Receiver Nolan Satcher recorded three touchdown receptions while Hunter McEachern tossed four touchdowns to pace the Blazers attack.

With 4:51 in the third quarter, the Blazers' defense stepped up as Isaiah Blackmon returned an interception from thirty yards out to put the Green and Gold ahead 35-29 to take the momentum back.

With McEachern sidelined due to an injury, junior quarterback Watson Fondren stepped in to sustain the Blazers' passing game. Fondren would connect with senior wide out Jareth Embry on a 77 yard passing play that extended the Blazers' lead to 42-31 with 5:23 left in regulation.

On the ensuing possession, Millsaps marched down the field and trimmed the lead down to five with 4:32 left. The Blazers tried to run out the clock but Millsaps was able to get the ball back with under a minute left to go.

After a couple of big plays, the Majors found themselves knocking on there door. The Blazer defense rose to the occasion and held their own. On the games final play, the defense forces a fumble and recovered to close out the game.

With the victory the Blazers start off the season 1-0.

McEachern finished the contest with 263 passing yards, while three Blazer receivers each had over 80 receiving yards. Kyky Austin led the way with 6 catches for 93 yards.

On the defensive side, Denarrius Noel dominated the line of scrimmage all evening with a team high 14 total tackles.

Belhaven will have a bye week next week and will return to action against Texas Lutheran on September 16.
