JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers Football team wrapped up competitive play for the spring semester with its annual spring game Friday night at Newell Field.
The Belhaven spring game, also known as the Green and White game, was split up between offense and defense. The Offense, or white team, defeated the Defense, or green team, 68-52 in the game.
The Defense was spotted 28 points to begin the game, and the offense made quick work to get to within striking distance of the Green team.
Darien Thomas caught two of the first three touchdowns of the first quarter from
Clayton Webb.
Following a fourth down stop by the defense, which earned the Green team three points, the White team added another touchdown with a toss from Webb to
Nolan Satcher, cutting the Green's lead to 33-28 after the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter the Belhaven defense came up with a big stop, forcing a fumble on its own one-yard line, keeping seven points off the scoreboard for the white team and adding seven points for the Green team, going up 41-28.
The White team then responded with an 80-yard drive that was capped off by the third touchdown grab of the night for Thomas, who led the Blazers in TD reception in the game.
Following a drive that ended with a 41-yard field goal by the offense, the white team went back down the field, executing a two-minute drill to perfection, scoring a touchdown with 17.2 seconds remaining.
The white team took the lead with the score, carrying a 45-44 lead into the half.
In the second half, points were traded early on. The white team started off with a touchdown drive, but the defense got on the scoreboard next.
On the following drive,
Justin Munoz picked off a Webb pass, earning the Green team seven points and tying the game at 52.
It would be the last points the defense would score, as the offense scored on its final three completed drives. Webb had a long touchdown pass that gave the Blazers offense a 59-52 lead.
Satcher then caught his second touchdown pass of the night, a 58-yard touchdown catch and run, for the longest play of the night. The score put Belhaven up 65-52 after a missed extra point.
Webb tossed a total of nine touchdown passes in the game.
The white team had one more completed drive on the night, which ended with a 34-yard field goal to give the game its final score of 68-52.
The Blazers will wrap up the spring with a couple of light practices, before heading into the summer break.
