Jackson, MS-Team Gold pulled out a 10-9 victory over Team Green on Saturday night at H.T. Newell Field in the annual Belhaven Football Green and Gold game. Both defenses looked impressive and there were some big plays made by each offense in a very entertaining contest.
Gold got on the board first when they drove the ball down the field on their opening possession of the game as quarterback
Jimmy Basford punched it in on a one yard touchdown run to make it 7-0. Gold tacked on a 38 yard field goal by Bo Ryan late in the second quarter and held a 10-0 edge at halftime.
Team Green did not give up and rallied for their first points with just over six minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Justin Miller connected on a 27 yard field goal to cut the Green deficit to 10-3 and then the defense made two crucial goal line stands that kept Gold from putting the game away.
Following a Ryan missed field goal, Green took over on their own 20 yard line and quarterback
Alex Williams led the offense on a late scoring drive setting up a chance at the comeback win. With 17 seconds on the fourth quarter clock, Williams found
Cordario Calvin on a five yard touchdown pass in the corner of the end zone that pulled Green to within one at 10-9. Green decided to go for two and Williams pass to Lamar Truman was complete, but Truman was brought down at the one yard line ending the game as Gold held on for the win.
The Blazers will open the regular season on August 28th when they travel to Texas College for a 6:00 PM kickoff.
