Jackson, MS-The Belhaven football program will be conducting the annual Green and Gold spring football game on Saturday at H.T. Newell Field. The kickoff is slated for 7:00 PM and admission to the game is free.
The game will feature 65 to 70 players who will be divided up into the Green and Gold teams. Returning players to watch on offense include quarterback
Alex Williams along with wide receivers
Cordario Calvin and
Kevin Dizer. Williams passed for nine touchdowns and 818 yards. Calvin led the Blazers a season ago in receiving with the 12 touchdowns and averaged 93.5 yards per game. He was also chosen as one of ten finalists for the 2009 Conerly Trophy which goes to the top college football player in Mississippi as voted on by select media representatives in the state. Dizer caught three touchdown passes in 2009 and averaged nearly 11 yards per reception. On the offensive line,
Sarron Anderson returns to help anchor the trenches and will be joined by newcomers
Taylor Quick and
Alex Kibby who will be putting on a Belhaven jersey for the first time in Saturday's spring game.
On defense,
Jack Hayes and
Baqui Thomas will return to help anchor the defensive line. Hayes had 42 total tackles, four sacks, and eight tackles for a loss last season. Thomas, who began his career at Belhaven on the defensive line, moved to the offensive line in 2009 but will be back on the defensive side of the ball in 2010.
Jonathan Gamberi after recording 2.5 sacks and five tackles for a loss in 2009 while newcomers Jerhosua Williams and
Reese Unger will join Gamberi, Hayes, and Thomas as players to watch on Saturday on the defensive line. At linebacker,
Ryan Rice will begin his transition from running back and fans will be able to see newcomer Ricky Waddlington in action for the first time.
The 2010 spring football game will cap a weekend of events that include the Blazer football golf tournament on Friday and an alumni gathering on Friday night during the Belhaven baseball game with Tougaloo College at Smith-Wills Stadium. Saturday's spring football game will also be broadcast via Stretch Internet through the Belhaven Athletics website beginning at 7:00 PM.
