Second-Half Goal Lifts LeTourneau Past Belhaven Women's Soccer

JACKSON, Miss. - A goal from Chanel Kemball-Cook in the 54th minute proved to be the difference Thursday evening as LeTourneau handed Belhaven its first loss of the season, 1-0, at Belhaven Bowl Stadium.

The result moved the Blazers to 1-1-1, while LeTourneau improved to 2-1.

LeTourneau controlled much of the opening half and finished the period with a 9-0 advantage in shots, but Addi Roberts kept the match level with five saves. The senior goalkeeper denied Lana Whiteman twice before making stops against Jaye Dugan and Kemball-Cook during the final 14 minutes of the half.

Roberts added another save shortly after the break, turning away Presley McIrvin's attempt in the 51st minute. LeTourneau found the breakthrough at the 53:19 mark when Kemball-Cook scored off assists from Sarah Wyatt and Sierra Kemball-Cook.

The goal ended Belhaven's season-opening shutout streak at 233 minutes and 19 seconds.

Belhaven responded by creating all four of its shots after falling behind. Kinsey Carter produced the Blazers' first attempt in the 57th minute, and Jensen Ward followed with shots in the 59th and 66th minutes.

The Blazers' best opportunity came in the 73rd minute when McKenzee Gregory placed a shot toward the bottom-right corner, but the LeTourneau defense recorded a team save to preserve the lead.

Roberts kept Belhaven within a goal down the stretch, stopping Kemball-Cook in the 80th minute before denying Saige West with less than three minutes remaining. Roberts finished with a season-high eight saves.

LeTourneau held a 14-4 advantage in shots and put nine attempts on goal. Gregory recorded Belhaven's lone shot on target, while Ward led the Blazers with two attempts. The Yellow Jackets finished with an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.

Belhaven returns to action Tuesday, Sept. 15, with a road match against Rhodes in Memphis, Tennessee. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
