Blazers Baseball Takes Series Against Asbury

PEARL, Miss. - It may have taken a day longer than anticipated, but the No. 21 ranked Belhaven Baseball team took two games from Asbury at Trustmark Park. The Blazers improved to 27-11 overall and have officially clinched the No. 2 seed in the upcoming CCS Tournament, where they will face LaGrange later next week.

Game One (Resumed): Belhaven 11, Asbury 1
Friday's opener resumed on Saturday with Belhaven already in control, and the Blazers finished the job with a complete performance.

Asbury scored first in the opening inning before Belhaven answered immediately. Blake McCarthy reached and came around to score on an RBI single from Nick Thornton to even things at 1-1.

Belhaven broke the game open in the second. After Parker Ryan singled and Chess Parker was hit by a pitch, the Blazers loaded the bases with a bunt single from Jake McCann. McCarthy followed with an RBI single, and Thornton added a sacrifice fly before Austin Canale delivered the biggest swing of the inning, a two-run triple down the line to make it 5-1.

The Blazers added on in the fourth. McCann was hit by a pitch to start the inning and later scored on a wild pitch before Canale picked up another RBI with a single to extend the lead to 7-1.

When play resumed, Belhaven continued to apply pressure. Thornton doubled home a run in the sixth inning after McCarthy reached on an error, pushing the advantage to 8-1.

The final push came in the eighth. McCann singled to start the inning, McCarthy followed with a double, and Trey Smith drove in two runs with a pinch-hit single. Canale added another base hit, and an error allowed one more run to cross as Belhaven closed out the 11-1 win.

On the mound, Gunner Staten set the tone early, allowing just one run over four innings while working around a few early baserunners. The bullpen took over from there, with Logan McNamara, Cole Covington, and Brady Boykin combining for four scoreless innings to close it out.

Belhaven finished with 14 hits, led by McCarthy's three-hit, five-run performance, while Canale drove in three runs.

Game Two: Belhaven 10, Asbury 2
The second game took a few innings to get going, but once it did, Belhaven pulled away. After a quiet start, the Blazers got on the board in the third. Brayden Thompson tripled to open the inning and scored on a groundout from McCarthy to make it 1-0.

Asbury tied the game in the fourth, but Belhaven responded with its biggest inning in the fifth.

Thompson worked a walk and stole second before McCarthy drew a walk to put two on. After a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, Owen Abney worked a walk to force in a run. Trey Smith followed with a hit-by-pitch RBI, and Hayden Roberts added another RBI after being hit by a pitch to extend the lead. Moments later, Braydon Evans singled up the middle to bring in another run as Belhaven took a 5-1 advantage.

The Blazers added more in the sixth. With runners on, Trey Flettrich delivered a two-run single to push the lead to 7-1.

Belhaven put the game out of reach in the seventh. After two walks set the table, Jonathan Corona connected on his first career home run, a three-run home run to center, stretching the lead to 10-1.

On the mound, Cole Burton turned in another strong outing, allowing just one run on one hit over five innings while striking out seven. He worked out of a fourth-inning jam after a walk and a stolen base, limiting the damage to a single run and keeping Belhaven in control.

The bullpen closed things out cleanly, with Shawn Mitchell-Harvard, Marcus Jackson, Christian Corona, and Brandon Rhodes combining to allow just one run over the final four innings.

Belhaven wraps up the regular season this weekend at home against Asbury before turning its attention to postseason play in the CCS Tournament.
