PEARL, Miss. - Belhaven Baseball wrapped up the regular season the right way this weekend, pulling away for an 11-6 win over Asbury at Trustmark Park. The Blazers finish at 28-11 overall and head into the postseason as the No. 2 seed in the CCS Tournament. They'll open tournament play Wednesday against No. 5 LaGrange, with game time still to be announced.
Asbury struck first in the opening inning, taking advantage of a leadoff double and a couple of baserunners to grab a 1-0 lead. Belhaven answered right away.
Nick Thornton doubled down the line and came around to score when
Chess Parker shot a single to center, tying things up at 1-1. Asbury pushed back in the second, putting together a two-run inning to go back in front 3-1.
Belhaven didn't take long to respond. In the third, Thornton reached again and
Hayden Roberts worked a walk to set the table.
Owen Abney stepped in and drove a two-run double into the gap, tying the game at 3-3.
A couple innings later, the Blazers took the lead. Parker reached and moved up on an error, and Abney came through again with an RBI single to make it 4-3.
The game flipped in the sixth, and it flipped fast. Belhaven loaded the bases and started cashing in. A wild pitch brought in a run, another followed, and the inning kept rolling.
Jake McCann delivered the big hit, clearing the bases with a line drive down the left field line.
Blake McCarthy added another RBI knock before it was over.
By the time the inning ended, Belhaven had put up six runs and built a 10-3 lead, but Asbury didn't go quietly.
In the eighth, they put together a three-run inning to cut it to 10-6 and bring some pressure late.
John Wade came on in the middle of it and kept things from getting any tighter, getting out of the inning with the lead still intact.
Belhaven added a run in the bottom half when
Micah Landry singled and eventually scored on a
Trey Smith groundout, giving the Blazers a little breathing room at 11-6.
Wade handled the rest of the ninth to close it out.
Now that the regular season is in the books, now it's on to the postseason.
Belhaven will face LaGrange in the opening round of the CCS Tournament on Wednesday. The Blazers swept the Panthers earlier this month, rallying from multi-run deficits in each of the final two games of that series.
Trustmark Park, the home of the Blazers, will be host to the CCS Tournament this upcoming week. Tickets will be available at the site with mobile pay options. No cash will be accepted. A single day pass will cost $20, while CCS students with a valid student ID can get a 50% discount.
