Blazers Men's Basketball Explodes for 122 Points vs. Piedmont

JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven Men's Basketball delivered a performance for the record books over the weekend, rolling to a 122-90 CCS victory at Rugg Arena over Piedmont.

The Blazers scored at will in both halves, posted one of the highest offensive outputs in program history, and overwhelmed the visitors with pace, ball movement, and full-court defensive pressure from the opening tip.

Belhaven's 122 points were the third-most in program history, and the Blazers now own two of the three highest scoring games in program history this season. The 47 made field goals were the most since Nov. 21, 2009, when Belhaven connected on 48 shots against Blue Mountain, and the Blazers recorded at least 30 assists for the first time since Nov. 23, 2016 at Rhodes.

Belhaven set the tone immediately with defensive intensity and transition scoring. After an early steal by Dan Robinson, the Blazers turned consecutive turnovers into baskets to jump out to a quick lead. A fast-break dunk by Kam Beverly capped an early run that forced a quick timeout and ignited the Rugg Arena crowd.

The visitors briefly found momentum behind interior finishes from Israel Hall and a transition bucket from Jackson Houston, but Belhaven responded with its first major surge of the game. A three from Benjamin Stewart, a putback by Dyllion Redmond, and another Beverly dunk pushed the margin into double digits.

The defining stretch of the half came midway through, as Belhaven rattled off a 15-4 run fueled by ball movement and defensive stops. Robinson picked off multiple passes during the stretch, leading to fast-break finishes, while Braylon Dame knocked down back-to-back threes to stretch the lead past 20.

Hall briefly slowed the run with a pair of baskets, but Belhaven closed the half with authority. A fast-break layup by Robinson following another steal, free throws from Christian McGahan, and a late tip-in by Hays Regard sent the Blazers into halftime with a commanding 64-45 lead after shooting 65 percent in the opening 20 minutes.

Belhaven showed no signs of easing off after the break. Beverly opened the half with another dunk, and Redmond followed with a finish inside as the Blazers quickly extended the lead. When Houston scored in transition to cut into the margin, Belhaven answered immediately with a three from CJ Minton and a fast-break layup off another Robinson steal.

The visitors attempted to rally behind Hall, who scored on consecutive possessions to bring the margin under 20, but that proved to be the closest the game would get. Belhaven responded with its most explosive stretch of the afternoon. Minton buried consecutive threes, Robinson converted back-to-back fast-break layups off of steals and Beverly finished another thunderous transition dunk.

That 18-4 run pushed the lead beyond 30 and effectively put the game out of reach.

Robinson continued to wreak havoc defensively, finishing the afternoon with seven steals, the third-most in a single game in program history and the most since Andre Taylor recorded seven steals in 2007 against Blue Mountain. Several of those steals directly led to transition baskets as the Blazers piled on points.

Minton, DJ Jones, and Zion Owens each knocked down threes, while McGahan and Beverly added finishes in the paint as the Blazers eclipsed the 100-point mark with more than eight minutes remaining.

The closing minutes showcased Belhaven's depth. Kade West scored late in the paint, and the Blazers continued to share the ball until the final horn sounded on the 122-90 victory.

Belhaven returns to action on Thursday at Asbury as conference play continues. Tip-off is set for 6:00 PM.
