WILMORE, Ky. - Belhaven Men's Basketball battled early but was unable to slow a hot-shooting Asbury squad Thursday night, falling 93-63 at the Luce Center. The Eagles shot 56.5 percent from the field and connected on 16 three-pointers. The Blazers move to 10-12 overall and 4-5 in CCS play.
Belhaven answered the game's opening dunk by Lual Ayiei with a layup from
Dyllion Redmond and a three from
CJ Minton to take a quick 5-2 lead. The early minutes were competitive, with both teams trading scores before Asbury found rhythm from the perimeter.
A three from Cam Jones tied the game at 5-5, and moments later Jonathan Combs hit a three and converted a fast-break layup to spark a 10-0 run that pushed the margin to 12-5. Ayiei added a dunk in transition as the Eagles began to control the paint.
Belhaven responded with a key stretch midway through the half. Redmond knocked down a three from the wing,
Charleston Wallace scored on back-to-back interior finishes, and Minton drilled a three at the 9:17 mark to cut the deficit to 22-19.
Asbury answered quickly. A three from Indred Whitaker, another from Jordan Lewis, and a putback from Ayiei stretched the lead to double digits. Combs capped the half with a late three at the 1:07 mark, sending Belhaven into the locker room trailing 40-30.
Belhaven trimmed the margin to seven early in the second half on a three by Redmond and back-to-back threes from Minton to make it 45-39. But each time the Blazers threatened, Asbury responded.
Combs hit another three to push the lead back to 10, and Ayiei followed with a dunk and a block on the defensive end to halt Belhaven's momentum. A three from Cam Jones at the 16:26 mark extended the margin to 50-39.
The Eagles' decisive stretch came midway through the half. Consecutive threes from Konlin Brown and Whitaker, combined with finishes in the paint from Ayiei and Lewis, fueled a 13-4 run that expanded the lead beyond 20.
Belhaven continued to compete inside, with
Neal Terry scoring on multiple putbacks and adding a dunk at the 5:55 mark. But a transition layup by Lewis and a late three from Brown in the closing minutes sealed the outcome.
Asbury shot 70.4 percent in the second half and closed the game on a 12-3 stretch to secure the 93-63 final.
The Blazers travel to Piedmont for their final regular season road game this season on Saturday. Tip off is set for 3:00 PM.
